After 12 years of working in wholesale, Kristin decided that she was ready to start 2 things: a family and a business of her own! Because she spent over a decade establishing herself in the fashion industry, Kristin was able to leverage her contact list from being an Account Executive to start a home-based sample sale business. Can you describe what a typical day is like as a personal shopper for us?

Usually, I send emails to prospective clients, search retail and fashion blogs for updates and head out to closet makeovers or a personal shopping appointment. I hold sample sale events and during fall and spring, the business is very hot. I might have 2-3 sample sales in one week, which also requires me to make sure the clothing is hung and ticketed properly prior to the sale.

What’s the best part of your job as a Personal Shopper/Image Consultant and what are the biggest challenges?

The best part of my job is the interaction with people. I absolutely love giving fashion advice to clients and watching them transform their style. The biggest challenge is running a home-based business with 3 kids! I’m always on the move…running to NYC to meet with vendors, managing my sample sale inventory and dashing to shopping appointments with my clients.

What are the most important skills that have led to your success?

I think my most valuable success trait is my people skills. I really believe in building a relationship with my client. I will never sell them a piece of clothing if it’s not really right for them. I would rather have them walk out empty-handed, but keep coming back, referring me to their friends and using my services. I am very outgoing and try to relate to them. I try not to be intimidating.

What advice can you give to people who want to become Personal Shoppers or who want to start a sample sale business of their own?

When working in Sales in New York, I had to have “thick skin” because the rejection from potential clients could be really tough. Newcomers to the industry must be prepared for that. By being personable, your accounts will follow you wherever you go. When you’re trying to break into the industry, you should be open to meeting everyone that you can and making sure that you build strong relationships. Your reputation is very important. If I didn’t develop relationships with people when I was working as a Sales Account Executive, I would have never been able to start a sample sale business.
